The Leonberger is a giant dog, strong, powerful and gifted, in spite of its size, with excellent agility and with a very nice nature: sweet, loving, and very nicely balanced.
A Leo loves to share every moment of its adopted family life, thus becoming especially suited to those who are looking for a true companion that will be welcomed in both their lives and their homes.
Its strong capability of bonding with humans, quick learning ability and balanced personality make this dog remarkably suited to work.
Agile, easy to train and very much at ease in the water, this dog can be without doubt employed in agility (where its sheer size works against it though), in obedience and, above all, in water work and rescue. This discipline seems especially suited to the breed because of its strong natural attraction to water, stemming from its probable origins linked to Newfoundland dogs, and for its keen res cue instinct also present in its ancestors’ DNA (St. Bernard or Newfoundland).
Together its moral and psychological traits that make it trustworthy and by character very apt for work, with its natural affinity for water, the Leonberger has in its morphological features an essential reason for its success in this field.
The muscle strength expressed over a very powerful bone structure are indeed critical. The Leonberger is a dog of remarkable size (without ever being lymphatic), reaches 80 cm of height at wit hers, mesomorphic, has an outstanding thoracic capacity (deriving from important transverse diameters and chest height and depth), well developed (without being too long) bone radiuses, big paws with strong and full fledged webbing.
The rachis is especially developed; the neck, back, loins, rump, fore and hindquarters are all very strongly muscled and give rise to a surprising sport performance but especially to power bound with a most remarkable endurance.
The head is mesomorphic, regular, with strong masse ters, a good holding surface and no respiratory impediments or deficiencies. Hair is double, longer at the neck and trunk (added buoyancy), shorter on limbs (no swimming drag and consequent impediment); the tail fully furred has a strong root and acts as energetic rudder.
